The Call to Biblical Vigilance
Weekly Sermon, 26 July 2026
By Pastor Sheldon Emry
Turn to Matthew 24. Watch and warn. In the New Testament, there are a number of passages telling God’s Christian people, the believers in Christ, to watch.
This sermon examines the biblical command to watch and warn as a fundamental duty for believers living at the end of the age. By synthesizing passages from the New Testament and the prophetic books of the Old Testament, we learn s a watchman as one who hears the word of God and delivers specific warnings to both the righteous and the wicked concerning their disobedience. Pastor Emry shows that contemporary geopolitical threats, such as communism, should be understood not merely as secular conflicts but as a divine sword sent by God due to national iniquity. Consequently, the ultimate purpose of the watchman is to urge the house of Israel to turn from sin, promising that true security is found only when God becomes an adversary to their adversaries. Effective vigilance requires a scriptural foundation, shifting the focus from reliance on human strength to a spiritual return to God’s law.
